On 22 December 2006, the Government of Tajikistan issued OAO Gazprom with licences to conduct geological studies in the following areas of oil and gas potential: Sargazon (Dangarinskii District) and Rengan (Rudaki District).
The licences were issued under the agreement between OAO Gazprom and the Tajik Government concerning joint strategic work in the gas industry, dated 15 May 2003.
The operator for the geological study project will be ZAO Zarubezhneftegaz, fully empowered by OAO Gazprom.
The Rengan area is 20 km South of Dushanbe, close to the national highway running between Dushanbe and Kurgantyube. The suggested gas-bearing area is estimated at 16 km2, and the potential resources at 35 bcm.
The Sargazon area is in Dangarinskii District, Hatlonskaya Oblast’, 150 km SE of Dushanbe. The main transport corridor is the main road from Dushanbe via Dangara to Kurgantyube. Detailed seismic works have not been carried out in the Sargazon area. Free gas resources are estimated at 30 bcm.
A total of 12 oil and gas deposits have now been opened in Southern Tajikistan, including 6 with oil, 4 with gas and 2 with oil and gas. Of these, two gas and five oil deposits are currently working.
The Republic’s consumption levels are 2.5 million tonnes of oil and 2.5 bcm of gas per year.
