ZAO Gazprom Zarubezhneftegaz (a 100% subsidiary of OAO Gazprom) has opened a natural gas deposit in the Djel Area, located in the Shakhpakhty Investment Area of the Ustyurt Plateau.
Tests on exploration well no.1, at a depth of 3,049 metres in the interval 2,387-2,396, produced an industrial flow of natural gas.
According to preliminary study data, the gas flow totalled about 350,000 m3 per day via a 12-mm nose-piece. Gas-dynamic planning tests are continuing to determine the principal parameters of the flow and the physical and chemical properties of the gas.
In the near future, the growth of hydrocarbon reserves will be studied and proposals prepared for further geological exploration works on the deposit.
The new deposit is located 15 km South-West of the Shakhpakhty Deposit, which is being exploited by the Zarubezhneftegaz – GPD Central Asia consortium, which will allow future reductions in the technical costs of preparing gas and supplying it to the market.
Geological surveys on the West Shakhpakhty structure started in the 1960s. In 1965-1967 five prospecting boreholes were drilled here, with planned depths at the mantles for the Jurassic and Permian-Triassic deposits. No industrial gas flows were discovered, however.
The present drilling, in the Djel Area, was prepared according to the results of 2D seismic surveys conducted in 2007-8. Gazprom zarubezhneftegaz is conducting the exploration works on the Ustyurt Plateau on the basis of the “Agreement concerning main principles for conducting geological studies of underground resources in the investment area of the Ustyurt Region of Uzbekistan”, signed on 25 January 2006 between OAO Gazprom and the National Holding Company Uzbekneftegaz”.
The technical and economic foundation of the project was prepared in 2006. In December 2006, to allow practical realisation of the project, OAO Gazprom was issued with licences to conduct geological surveys in seven areas.
The total investment made in the GSW project is assessed at USD400 million. ZAO Gazprom zarubezhneftegaz is realising a whole series of Gazprom projects involving hydrocarbon searches and prospecting outside Russia. The company is currently realising investment projects in Uzbekistan, Tajikistan, Kyrgyzstan, Vietnam and India.
